World Wind Wilds
I finally am home from my trip abroad and I can tell you that the two weeks I was gone my Mesh network was up and running. How wonderful! The trip was a drive from Toronto to Tampa Bay Florida then a cruise to Grand Caymen, Costa Maya, Cozumel, Belize and back to Tampa. From there we went to Orlando then back up the I-75 to Detroit then scooted up to Toronto. 5000 Km travel in a short period of time.
I took my laptop with my wireless connection thinking that with all the free bandwidth in USA that I would easily be able to connect to the internet and stay in touch; however, this was not the case.
Driving out of my mesh I found getting reliably Wi-Fi signal was near to impossible. Staying in hotels along the route that offered Wi-fi connection or Ethernet over power became a challenge. Most of the time the person behind the desk had no clue how to use if or if it was running. I think I need to put an article together of how to put Wi-FI in a Hotel or Motel. They way that have done is pure BS.
Rather than bore you with details I found that trying to keep connected a long US i-75 route was nearly impossible.
The worst part was that the ship I took offered wireless connectivity. I was really wanting to know how the install Wi-Fi through out the ship. Well I was wrong. The only part of the ship that had Wi-fi was the library and surround area. Next the cost was ready for this $120 US for one hour of high speed internet. So stupid me asked "if it was really high speed" and they said "yes." So I ask if I could run a speed test and found it was marginal at best and 56K would have been an improvement. Nevertheless I didn't purchase it. I found a few people on the ship that purchased and was able to link to there laptops put then again gave after google splash page took about 20 seconds to download.
I figure I could use the internet cafe on the islands and other countries; however, my youngest sound said it was more important to swim with the stingray then to surf the net.
When we got to Orlando I figure that resort that we were staying in would have a Wi-Fi connection and sure enough they did! But they were currently changing providers and were not offering that service that week I was there.
When I came home yesterday I turn on my PC and found over 3000 emails waiting for me. Unfortunately majority was spam.
Because of the poor access to the internet I could not get into Wiana. So I figure I would check for messages and to my surprise no one call.
The network was fine!
I see a lot of opportunity in USA, Mexico, Grand Cayman, Belize and Canada. You think with all the technology that I would have been able to stay connected.
